Board Briefs - February 11, 2020

During its regular meeting of February 11, 2020, the Governing Board of the Travis Unified School District...

 …heard a presentation by Cambridge Elementary students regarding their Extra-Curricular Programs;

 ...recognized

  • the outstanding classified employees who have been selected as Travis USD 2019-20 Classified School Employees of the Year in designated categories: Vivian Pochop, Office & Technical; Kristina Pickering, Para-Educator; Sandra Vanderlaan, Student Services and Security. In addition, Vivian Pochop, Special Education Secretary, was selected as the Travis USD Classified School Employee of the Year to represent the district at the County level for consideration as Solano County Classified School Employee of the Year.
  • the exemplary teachers who have been selected as Travis USD 2020-21 Site Teachers of the Year for our eight school sites Kim Lovelady, Cambridge Elementary; Adrianne Solorio, Center Elementary; Amy Armstrong, Foxboro; Anna Chavez, Scandia Elementary; Melissa Philips, Travis Elementary; Sheena Urmaza, Golden West Middle; Michael Howell, Vanden High; and Andre Garcia, Travis Education Center. In addition, Vanden Science teacher Michael Howell was selected as TUSD Teacher of the Year to represent the district at the County level for consideration as Solano County Teacher of the Year.

 ...held a public hearing to offer opportunity for public comment regarding Travis Unified School District’s (TUSD) contract proposal for negotiations with California School Employees Association (CSEA), Chapter 454. The Board later adopted TUSD’s Initial Proposal to CSEA and accepted CSEA’s proposal to TUSD.

…approved Vanden’s overnight student field trip requests: Robotics will participate in the Utah Regional First Robotics Competition in West Valley City, Utah March 4-8, 2020; Robotics will also participate in the FIRST Robotics World Championship in Houston, Texas April 15-18, 2020; Friday Night Live students will participate in the Friday Night Live Summit in Garden Grove, CA February 13-16, 2020;

...approved board policies related to the superintendent’s contract, campus security, consultants, lactation accommodation, employee compensation, intradistrict and interdistrict attendance, bullying, administration of medication and monitoring of health conditions, courses of study, homework/makeup work, and student board members;

...heard a 2020-21 Governor's Budget Proposal Presentation on the Governor’s Proposed 2020-2021 Budget which presented the educational highlights of Governor Newsom’s proposed budget. Due to the Governor’s interest outside of education, his proposal includes only COLA (cost of living adjustment) in the amount of 2.29%. This, along with the District’s declining enrollment in the current year, will cause the need to report a “Qualified” certification for 2019-20. “Qualified” means that, based on current data and barring certain reductions or revenue enhancements, the District may not meet its financial obligations for subsequent fiscal years.
