District expands Home Base Independent Study program
For Immediate Release—June 15, 2020
Fairfield, CA — Beginning the 2020/2021 school year, Travis Unified will offer a rigorous, flexible, and no-cost avenue for academic success outside of the traditional classroom. TUSD’s expanded Independent Study (IS) program will allow K-12 students to pursue educational opportunities outside the classroom yet within the framework of District educational requirements.
A credentialed advisory instructor will oversee and partner with each family to create a personalized learning plan that will meet California State Standards. Parents will be provided appropriate educational materials and instructional support. Additionally, as restrictions on gatherings are lifted, families will be offered optional opportunities to participate in field trips, parent workshops, and other activities designed to support families, extend the learning process, and offer social interactions and physical activity.
Parents will provide direction and monitor student progress using instructional strategies designed to respond to individual student needs and learning styles.
The District is excited to offer students another avenue for academic success through the engaging projects and interactive multimedia resource of independent study, with full support from certificated teachers along with tools and supports for parents. The IS program provides another choice for families and another option for students seeking an alternative to the traditional educational experience.
