Travis Unified School District has adopted the 2019-2020 and the 2020-2021 academic calendars The approval comes after several months of discussion between the District and the teachers’ union. Considerations included the timing of breaks within the school which best benefits student achievement, as well as the year in which to switch to a modified calendar. The 2019-20 calendar sets the first day of school as August 14, 2019. 

Development of the calendars began September 20, 2018, and continued during meetings with TUTA (Travis Unified Teachers Association), the certificated staff labor union. The academic calendar, as a function of negotiations between administrative staff and the union, is discussed and developed each year. After much collaboration, the District is excited to be able to present, for the first time, student calendars for multiple years. “This is a huge accomplishment,” states Superintendent Pam Conklin, “Which attempts to give parents and staff ample time to make plans for the summer months and all year long.” 

The modified traditional calendar includes an earlier start date and an additional week-long break, providing for better balanced semesters and a much-needed respite for both students and staff. 

Here are a few highlights of the 2019-20 calendar:

• Earlier start date – August 14, 2019
• 1 additional professional development day for staff
• Additional week-long break – October 11-18, 2019
• Thanksgiving break – November 25-28, 2019
• Winter break - December 23, 2019 through January 3, 2020
• Spring break – April 10-17, 2020
• Last day of school – June 5, 2020
