Travis USD Community Mourns the Loss of Longtime Board Member

It is with extreme sadness that Travis Unified School District announces the untimely death of longtime Board Member Angela Weinzinger. Mrs. Weinzinger passed away on September 26, after succumbing to a prolonged heart condition. Angela was returning from the NAFIS (National Association of Federally Impacted Schools) Conference in Washington, DC, where she spent the last few days of her life in service advocating for Travis Unified students.

Serving on the Board since 2011, and as Board President in 2013 and 2017, she was well respected and loved by Board colleagues. Many recount her delightful comradery and dedication. “Angela spent tireless hours at school events and activities to show her support and enthusiasm for the students and staff of TUSD” recalls Riitta DeAnda, Board President, “I will always remember her to be a person of unfailing character and unwavering integrity.”

While serving on the Board, Angela spoke out on a number of issues: ensuring students are the number one priority; encouraging parents to participate in their child’s education, both at school and at public forums where their voice can be heard; and focusing on the goals of the Board and the District. In addition to fulfilling her responsibilities of an elected official, Angela was also faithfully involved with the Band and Winter Guard at Vanden High School and was a huge proponent of the Alternative Education Program at Travis Education Center.

Angela connected well with military-connected children. Her husband served in the military, and her eldest son is currently serving in the Navy.  She was very active in the Celebration of the Military Child and many other military-associated initiatives. She also had been involved with political campaigns and was very active in her church.

Angela is survived by her husband, Evan, who has been her companion for over 27 years, and her three children. Her two oldest children, Forest and Kaila, are TUSD graduates. Her youngest daughter, Lauren, is a junior at Vanden, where she has been an active member of the band.

Our hearts go out to Angela’s family. We will fondly remember her as an ambassador for children, a loving mother and wife, and one of the finest human beings you would ever want to meet.
