Operation Open Doors: a Department of Defense Educational Activity grant

Travis Unified School District is pleased to announce that we have received a DoDEA (Department of Defense Educational Activity) grant.  This is a five year grant with 2017-18 being the planning year and Years 2-5 for implementation.  With a focus on college and career readiness, this grant intends to provide students and families with support and activities to help students develop a 10-year plan for college/career readiness.  Here are the major goals:

  • Increase the number of military dependent students completing courses required for college admission with a grade of C or better
  • Use Naviance, a college and career planning program, and college entrance exams to help students map out plans for their future
  • Enhance the JROTC program at the high school through virtual learning and the use of computer technology
  • Expand student horizons through extracurricular activities where students experience elements of various careers.  Provide work-based learning experiences for high school students.

Watch for updates as we start the implementation plan in 2018-19.  If you would like more information, contact Connie Green at 707.437.4604, ext. 1202 or at cgreen@travisusd.org.

Update:

Many great things happened in 2018-19.  Students participated in several work-based learning activities and trips to Trade Fairs, local colleges, and businesses.  Students are starting work on mapping out plans for their future through the use of Naviance, a college and career planning program.  JROTC has new laptops and desktop computers to support the JROTC program including career exploration.  High school students participated in job shadows and internships gaining first hand experience for various careers including the medical field, engineering, and video production.
