    Independent Study Options in Travis Unified

     Travis Unified School District can offer an independent study option for students based upon a profound, extenuating circumstance. 

    Process:

    1) Fill out the application at https://forms.office.com/r/uXd423FcE4 

    2) You will be contacted to schedule a meeting with the Placement Review Board

    3) Should the Placement Review Board find Independent Study an appropriate option, you will receive a Master Agreement that needs to be signed before the student begins.

    While enrolled in Independent Study, students complete assigned work and assessments that are consistent with state and district standards.

    Eligibility 

    • A student participating in independent study must be a resident of Travis Unified School District. Full-time independent study shall not be available to students whose district residency status is based on their parent/guardian's employment within district boundaries pursuant to Education Code 48204. (Education Code 46300.2, 51747.3)  
    • Students who are on an Inter District Agreement (IDA) are not eligible for Independent Study. IDAs are made for specific school sites.
    • A student with disabilities, as defined in Education Code 56026, shall not participate in independent study unless the student's individualized education program specifically provides for such participation. (Education Code 51745) A temporarily disabled student shall not receive individual instruction pursuant to Education Code 48206.3 by means of independent study. (Education Code 51745) 
    • Independent Study requires students to be strong, independent learners. Therefore, the eligibility criteria includes a review of both grades and test scores.

    The program is structured as follows:

     Grades K – 6:  

          Student will have contact with staff every school day, as prescribed below: 

    • Student will virtually participate in a minimum of 30 minutes of daily synchronous instruction 
    • Time to be determined by the independent study teacher in mutual agreement with parent/guardian. 
    • Instruction and assignments will be delivered and submitted via Google Classroom. 
    • Student will complete independent work, as assigned by the independent study teacher, under the supervision of the parent/guardian. 

    Grades 7-8:    

    Student will have contact with staff every school day, as prescribed below: 

    • Student will virtually participate in a minimum of 30 minutes of weekly synchronous instruction
      (1 day per week)
    • Student will virtually participate in daily live interaction with independent study staff
      (
      4 days per week)
    • Instruction and assignments will be delivered and submitted via Google Classroom
    • Time and manner of daily live interaction to be determined by the independent study teacher/staff in mutual agreement with parent/guardian.
    • Student will complete independent work, as assigned by the independent study teacher, under the supervision of the parent/guardian.  

    Grades 9-12:

    Student will have contact with staff at least 1 time per school week, as prescribed below:      

    • Student will participate in a minimum of 60 minutes of synchronous instruction per week, via Google Classroom. 
    • Time to be determined by the independent study teacher, in mutual agreement with parent/guardian and student. 
    • Instruction and assignments will be delivered and submitted via Cyber High.
    • Student will complete independent work, as assigned by the independent study teacher, under the supervision of the parent/guardian.  

    Definitions 

    Live interaction means interaction between the student and classified or certificated staff, and may include peers, provided for the purpose of maintaining school connectedness, including, but not limited to, wellness checks, progress monitoring, provision of services, and instruction. This interaction may take place in person, or in the form of Internet or telephonic communication. (Education Code 51745.5) 

    Synchronous instruction means classroom-style instruction or designated small group or one-on-one instruction delivered in person, or in the form of Internet or telephonic communications, and involving live two-way communication between the teacher and student. Synchronous instruction shall be provided by the teacher of record for that student pursuant to Education Code 51747.5. (Education Code 51745.5)

    If you have applied for the 23-24 school year, we will be contacting you regarding eligibility and next steps. 

    • Independent Study is an impacted program. You must be a Travis Unified Student to be accepted. 
    • If you are a Travis Unified student currently on an Interdistrict Agreement, you must remain at the school listed on the agreement.
