Assistant Superintendent, Educational Services
Years in Education: 29 in K-12 education
First job: Teaching horseback riding to kids.
What inspired you to enter the field of education? I started as a preschool teacher with a class of 4-year-olds, and got hooked on teaching. Kids can learn anything, and it is a lot of fun to watch their excitement as they understand challenging concepts and learn new skills.
Years in Travis USD: This is my 2nd year.
Best thing about working in TUSD: The people. We have brilliant, creative, student-focused teachers, and my administrative colleagues are amazing. Our classified staff is very dedicated and does a great job. There is strong parent support for education in this community, and parents are involved in their children’s education. Our students are smart, hard-working, and sometimes really funny.
What outside experience prepared you best to become an educator? College was helpful because I learned a lot of interesting things that I could weave into science lessons to make them come alive for kids. Teaching riding, and working at summer camps taught me how to help kids conquer their fears and gain confidence, and how success leads to high self-esteem and motivation.
Do you have a particular goal that drives you? I believe that all students can learn at high levels, and I want our students to feel the joy of learning and the heady rush of success every single day. I want our teachers to find their work absorbing and deeply satisfying, and to know, at the end of the day, that they made a positive difference in the lives of the children entrusted to them.
